Zachary Levi Wanted To Play Deadpool

Deadpool is easily one of the most popular Marvel characters to exist. The quirky merc with a mouth has kept readers enthralled for years, with his hilarious quips and fourth-wall break moments. Deadpool is probably the only superhero who is aware that he is actually in a comic, and this has led to many real-life references and jokes. It was therefore no surprise that Deadpool’s movie adaptation would be equally popular with the fans, and it turned out to be true. Despite being Marvel’s first ever R-rated movie, Deadpool was a commercial success, raking in over $782 million against a $58 million budget, becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2016 and breaking numerous records, including highest-grossing X-Men film and R-rated film at the time.

Zachary Levi Wanted To Play Deadpool

Released in 2016, the movie starred Ryan Reynolds as the titular character. It became so popular that the studios decided to release a sequel, which was eventually released in 2018 and went on to outgrossed its predecessor, earning over $786 million worldwide, becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2018, the highest-grossing film in the X-Men series, as well as the highest-grossing R-rated film. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised its humor, cast performances, story and action sequences but criticized its tone and script. One of the main reasons for the success was undoubtedly its star, Ryan Reynolds. The actor played Deadpool to such perfection that now it would be difficult to imagine anyone else playing the same. However, it has now turned out that another popular superhero actor had wanted to play the part of the fan-favorite character. Read on to find out more.

Shazam star Zachary Levi reveals he dreamed of playing Deadpool for years before Ryan Reynolds was ultimately cast as the merc with a mouth. If the fans remember correctly, Levi made his Marvel Cinematic Universe(MCU) as Fandral in Thor: The Dark World, taking over the part from Josh Dallas due to scheduling conflicts. However, this would be short-lived as Fandral was killed off in Thor: Ragnarok causing Levi to bring his talents to the DC Extended Universe(DCEU) for Shazam!, which again, turned out to be a huge success, receiving positive reviews from critics and also currently has a sequel in the works.

While attending this year's DragonCon, Levi revealed that before he was cast in the DCEU, he had always dreamed of bringing Deadpool to life on the screen. While admitting some jealousy for Reynolds landing the part, the star did express his admiration for Reynold's work as Deadpool thus far. This is what Levi had to say:

“For years I’ve wanted to be Deadpool. I was so jealous that Ryan… he rocked that… when you see somebody do something that you’ve wanted to do for a long time, and they do it great, you’re like ‘kudos, rock ‘n roll.’ Reed Richards would be kind of fun. But to be truthful, I don’t even really allow myself to go down those roads because I’m so good. I’m so set. The fact that I even get to be Captain Marvel/Shazam!/Billy Batson, it’s such a fun dream role. And it’s got so much different DNA than almost every other superhero."
