Anthony Mackie To Return as Captain America in 4th Installment

With the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier behind him, Anthonie Mackie is all set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America 4. The actor was last seen in the popular Phase4 project, which saw Sam Wilson deal with the issues caused due Steve passing on the mantle of Captain America to him and the aftermath of Tony Stark’s snap. The series famously also saw Mackie’s character finally stepping up and becoming the new Captain America, and it looks like Mackie will be returning to play the same role in the latest movie. As soon as the series ended,  reports surfaced that a Captain America 4 was officially in development, but Mackie hadn't been confirmed to star in the film.

However, it has now been confirmed that Mackie will indeed be reprising the role of Captain America in the movie, with him having signed a deal to star in his first solo MCU feature. Details are under wraps about the film, including its official title. It is also unclear if Sebastian Stan will reprise his role as Bucky Barnes in the movie after he worked closely with Sam during their Disney+ series. A director has not been set for the film.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT CAPTAIN AMERICA 4

Mackie made his MCU debut in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier as Sam Wilson aka the Falcon. The movie saw Sam and the MCU's original Captain America, Steve Rogers, form a close bond. He would go on to become the hero Falcon, assisting Steve in various other missions. Wilson also stands with Rogers during Captain America: Civil War and subsequently goes on the run when the government declares them as fugitives. They return to fight Thanos in Infinity War, but are dusted away by Thanos’ snap. Only to return in Endgame, where Steve Rogers hands Wilson the mantle of Captain America.

As of now, it's unclear when Captain America 4 could release, but it's no surprise Mackie has signed on for the film. With the studio already having a fully packed Phase 4 slate, it seems like Captain America 4 could be a long way off. Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman is reportedly writing the script for Captain America 4 along with Dalan Musson, who also wrote for the series. This certainly indicates that Marvel wants to continue fleshing out the timely themes on display in the Disney+ series, but how Captain America 4 will factor into the larger plot of the MCU remains a mystery.
