Taskmaster's Imitation of Avengers in Black Widow: Check out Complete List

This week saw the much awaited release of Marvel’s Black Widow, a film that was supposed to have been released back in 2020. But due to the covid situation around the world, it was only able to be released this year. Set to take place between the events of Civil War and that of Infinity War, the movie sees Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confront the darker parts of her ledger and battle a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha has to deal with her dark past and revisit relationships broken long before she became an Avenger. The film also features Florence Pugh as Yelena Beleova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov or the red Guardian and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. These characters are part of Natasha’s “family” with ties to the Red Room that is responsible for the creation of other “widows” like Natasha and Yelena.

Taskmaster's Imitation of Avengers

What’s one of the more surprising parts is the movie’s villain, Taskmaster. Taskmaster has the ability to mimic the fighting styles of any one he wants, given that he has seen them fight at least once. He is also a highly skilled tactician, having expertise in martial arts and trains thugs for high-profile organisations that perpetrate crime. While the comics mention his true identity to be Anthony “Tony” Masters, the film has a surprise twist that reveals the Taskmaster’s true identity to be Antonia Dreykov, the daughter of the Red Room's overseer. She was modified with a computer chip after her near-death in an explosion decades earlier when she was a young girl. While this move was met with criticism from the fans, it did not take away much from the movie. It is indeed no surprise that having an opponent like the Taskmaster who can copy your each and every move is a troublesome task, what’s even more worrying is when he starts to bring back moves that belong to your friends and people you’ve worked with. In the movie, we see the Taskmaster mimic some of Marvel’s famous superheroes while battling Natasha and her allies, thus throwing some amazing references and call backs to the MCU’s older movies. Here are some of the most noticeable ones.

  • Captain America

Taskmaster's Imitation of Captain America

The Taskmaster relies most heavily on Natasha’s close friend and colleague, Steve Rogers. Seen with a shield for a majority of the first half of the movie, he manages to use the shield the same way Steve would, mimicking his signature shield retrieval technique several times throughout the movie, stomping on the shield's edge to flip it into his hands. Even offensively, we see a lot of Captain America in the way the Taskmaster fought, throwing the shield exactly as Steve does, wedging it diagonally in a car window during his first fight with Natasha and also in his fight with the Red Guardian. Using the blunt edge of the shield to land precise hits on Alexei's body, similar to the way Steve used it in his fight with Tony Stark during Civil War.

  • Black Panther

During his fight with Alexei, the Taskmaster briefly mimics Black Panther, extending razor-sharp claws and attacking him using them. However this would be the only scene where we see Taskmaster mimic Black Panther.

  • Hawkeye

In what can be considered to be an extremely personal attack on Natasha, the Taskmaster mimics Hawkeye’s fighting style while chasing Natasha and Yelena, shooting an arrow toward the undercarriage of their vehicle. causing the car to explode and flip over. This particular scene also sneaks in a reference to none other than the Winter Soldier, calling back to the scene from Captain America: The Winter Soldier; where Winter Soldier attacks Nick Fury’s car. As it has been made apparent many times in the MCU, Hawkeye/ Clint Barton is an extremely close friend of Natasha who she has deep affection for. And mimicking him would no doubt be a very efficient mind game to play.

  • The Winder Soldier

Speaking of the Winter Soldier, Taskmaster also displays numerous instances where he mimics Bucky’s fighting style. Most noticeably the one in the Captain America: The Winter Soldier fight against Steve where the Winter Soldier is seen flipping a small blade around in his hand, at one point dropping her knife to his other hand in a surprise attack. This move is adopted by the Taskmaster in his fight against the Red Guardian.

  • Black Widow

Any movie involving a villain who can copy moves would be incomplete without him trying to copy the protagonist. And Black Widow is no exception to this as the Taskmaster mimics none other than Natasha herself during the fight with the other Red Room trainees. Also, in the first fight with Natasha, the Taskmaster uses the Avenger's signature leg throw, using twisting momentum to bring her opponent to the ground, much like how Natasha does.
