James Gunn on Guardians of The Galaxy 3

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad approaches its release date of August 6th, but he’s also about to start filming a movie whose script predates his involvement with DC – Guardians of the Galaxy 3. The third installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise will pick up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, which saw Tony Stark using the Infinity Stones to undo Thanos’ snap. This saw all the superheroes who got dusted make a return, including members of the guardians like Peter Quill, Drax, Groot and Mantis.

Endgame also saw the return of Gamora, who had previously been sacrificed by Thanos to obtain the Soul Stone from Vormir. However, the Gamora we got in Endgame is not the same, she is the past version of Gamora. That is, the version of Gamora before she met the Guardians. In addition, we also get to see the God Of Thunder, Thor join the Guardians at the end of Endgame. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will therefore serve to act as the continuation to the story. Set after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder, the movie will apparently see Peter Quill aka Starlord look for Gamora, who he met during the final battle in Endgame. It will probably also give us an answer as to what happened in the period between the end of Endgame and the third Thor movie. Here’s what the director had to say about the movie.

With production of the movie set to begin later this year, director James Gunn sat down for an interview tied to the press day for The Suicide Squad Collider’s own Steve Weintraub. When asked about the details on the shoot, the filmmaker confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will start filming in Georgia in November. He also confirmed the movie’s title. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3.

Even though Gunn has spent the last two years making The Suicide Squad and the HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker, he said that the script for Guardians 3 has been finished for years, adding that he’s currently making some minor changes to a new draft. He went on to say:

“It’s basically been finished for years. I keep fiddling with different things and adding things, and figuring out permutations and stuff — I’m in the middle of doing another draft now — but it’s really small stuff in comparison to what it has been. It’s basically been finished since three years ago.”

As mentioned before, the Guardians will be seeing a lot of changes in the MCU between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Vol. 3, notably the death of Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War and the arrival of a different version of the character from earlier in the timeline in Avengers: Endgame. And while Gunn mentioned that he was not asked to include anything as that tied the movie to future films like the addition of Thanos in the first Guardians movie, he did say that he focussed on what the Guardians have been up to in order to reflect developments like Gamora’s arc when it comes to picking the characters up again in Guardians of the Galaxy 3:

“The only time they ever (asked me to include something for future MCU movies) was on the first movie with Thanos, putting Thanos in there. Which they wanted me to do. But besides that they’ve never done that. I have to pay attention to things that happen, which they did talk to me about – the stuff with Gamora and things like that. I know that the characters have been through certain things, so I have to deal with that stuff. But for the most part, they never once asked me to put anything in the script for Volume 3 to set up anything in the future. Nor would I do it, frankly, it’s not really my thing.”
